Building Your Special Needs Team: Who Are the Key People in Your Circle?
When I work with families as a Special Needs Certified Financial Planner®, I always tell them one thing: you don't have to do this alone. Special needs planning is a lot like a team sport. To make sure your loved one is safe, happy, and financially secure for the rest of their life, you need a group of experts and supporters working together.
Understanding who does what can make the whole process feel much less overwhelming. Here are the most important players you’ll want on your team.
The Heart of the Plan: Your Loved One
The most important person on the team is the individual with a disability. Everything we do is centered around their dreams, their health, and their future. Whenever possible, we want them involved in the conversation. Their voice helps us understand what kind of life they want to lead, which is the "north star" for our financial and legal decisions.
The Visionaries: Parents and Caregivers
As parents or primary caregivers, you are the experts on your family’s daily life. You provide the history, the current care, and the vision for the future. You are the ones who know which therapies work and what your child’s favorite activities are. My job is to take your vision and turn it into a realistic financial roadmap.

The Legal Expert: The Special Needs Attorney
You can’t have a solid plan without the right legal documents. A special needs attorney is vital because they understand the complex laws that govern disability rights. They help you create a Special Needs Trust (SNT), write a proper Will, and set up powers of attorney or guardianship if needed. These documents act as the "rules of the game" to protect your child’s eligibility for government benefits like SSI or Medicaid.
The Financial Architect: The Special Needs Financial Planner®
This is where I come in! While the attorney writes the documents, I help you find the money to fund them. I look at your entire financial life—from savings and life insurance to government benefits—to make sure there is enough money to last your child’s entire lifetime. We work on "stress-testing" your plan to ensure that even when you are no longer here, the money will be there.
The Trustee: The Financial Guardian
A Trustee is the person or company in charge of the money inside the Special Needs Trust. This is a big job! They have to make sure the money is spent according to the rules of the trust and that it doesn't accidentally stop government benefits. Choosing the right trustee—whether it's a family member or a professional bank—is one of the biggest decisions you will make.
Choosing a trustee is a major step in your child’s security. If you need help weighing the pros and cons of family vs. professional trustees, reach out to our office for a consultation today.
The Navigators: Case Managers and Advocates
Sometimes, the hardest part of special needs planning is dealing with the day-to-day paperwork and services. Case managers and educational advocates help you navigate school meetings (like IEPs) and help you apply for home-based services. They are the "boots on the ground" who make sure your loved one is getting the support they are entitled to right now.
The Support System: Friends and Extended Family
Don't forget the "Circle of Support." These are the aunts, uncles, siblings, and friends who offer emotional support. They are the people who will be there for your child on a personal level. It is helpful to include them in the plan so they know how they can best help when the time comes.
Bringing It All Together
A great plan isn't just a stack of papers in a drawer; it's a living, breathing connection between all these people. When your attorney, your financial planner, and your family are all on the same page, you can sleep better at night knowing your child has a community of care surrounding them.
